Muzeum Samorządowe Ziemi Strzyżowskiej im. Zygmunta Leśniaka

The museum was first established by a local high school teacher Zygmunt Leśniak in 1959, when he began gathering artifacts brought to him by his students and their families. At first, the collection grew in the school basement but as years went on and the number of exhibits began to outgrow the cramped and humid space, the collection was divided. A Memorial Room was established in the high school building and it was devoted to the history of schools in Strzyżów. The difficulties in finding a permanent home for the exhibits―which had to be moved a total of 9 times in just over ten years―eased in 1971, when the Public Museum was officially transferred into the care of the city authorities. A permanent home was found for the collection in a 17th century tenement house at Rynek 28. The museum was officially opened in its new permanent building on the 28th of September 1972. That location, too, however, proved problematic. The location in the city centre was perfect but the interior conditions inside were far from perfect for housing the artifacts. There were many attempts to change the location in the following years, all of them ultimately unsuccessful. In 1991 the museum was finally moved to the former manor of the Dydyński family at Modrzewiowa 1A, on the right bank of the Wisłok River. The building was renovated and the entire first floor was dedicated to the museum. In 2011 the now-existing City Museum in Strzyżów, named after its original founder professor Zygmunt Leśniak, was legally established, taking over the collection and wealth of the Regional Public Museum. The museum in its current location―the 19th century tenement house at Łukasiewicza 10―was officially opened on May 17th 2014 during the first Museum Night hosted in Strzyżów.
The collection of the museum is comprised of several thousand artifacts of high value from the following categories: paleonthology, archaeology, history, archives, material culture, military antiquities, art, and ethnography. Beside the main building at Łukasiewicza 10, the museum has three branches located in various parts of Strzyżów: the Nazi shelter tunnel at Tunelowa Street in the eastern part of the city, the City Gallery at Rynek 15 in the city centre, as well as an exhibition devoted to Jewish citizens of Strzyżów, housed in the former synagogue (currently a library) at Przecławczyka 6.
The museum is open for individual visitors and groups. Since 2014 it participates in the countrywide Museum Night festival. The mission of the museum is to support local artists and scholars, as well as to actively promote patriotism through hosting exhibitions, workshops, meetings, and contests. The organization protects not only the material remnants of the past, but also the knowledge of local history, and helps pass it on to next generations and visitors from all over the world.
